Harmonizing Color and Complexity: Mastering the Art of Contextual Façades at Amazon’s HQ2

Phase One of Amazon’s HQ2 at Metropolitan Park employs a single custom façade solution that harmonizes the 2.1 million SF project with its surrounding neighborhood while creating distinct identity on the Arlington skyline

The design team employed a single curtain wall system and a kit-of-parts approach capable of incorporating six primary façade types. The multitude of façade types helped the team scale down the buildings’ perceived mass while achieving unique identities across two towers

Materials including glazed terracotta, copper-colored perforated metal screen, dichroic glass, and color changing-coated metal fins all work together to shape a façade that is as iconic as it is high-performing
